Some people may argue that Kratom is good for pain’s relieve and some may argue that Kratom is a drug. Before you make a judgment, you should understand what is Kratom first. Kratom is a tropical evergreen tree which mainly comes from Southeast Asia. Its botanical name is Mitragyna speciosa. Kratom is still in the same family as the coffee tree or Rubiaceae. You can find a lot of Kratom trees in several Southeast Asia countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. The leaves have been used to relieve pain for hundreds of years.
Kratom can be eaten raw, but nowadays people often consumed it by crushed and brewed as a tea or turned into capsules, tablets, and liquids. People in the past like chewed fresh kratom leaves after they remove the stringy central vein. Dried leaves also can be chewed, but since they are a little tough, most people prefer to make them into powder so that they can be easily swallowed. The Kratom Powder has a bitter taste so people usually mix the powder with some beverages such as water, milk, fruit juice, etc. The powder can also be mixed with applesauce or yogurt. Mixing the Kratom powder is the most favorite method because it is quick and easy.

In low doses, kratom can act as a stimulant. In large amounts, it can be used as a sedative, but the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says Kratom in a large amount of consumption can lead to psychotic symptoms and psychological addiction. There are more than 20 alkaloids contain in kratom that has been identified, including the alkaloid mitragynine. Those substances are responsible for the majority of the pain relief action. Mitragynine is classified as a kappa-opioid receptor agonist and it has been known 13 times more potent than morphine. Mitragynine also responsible for the opioid-like effects. Due to its opioid-like action, Kratom has been used for the treatment of pain and opioid withdrawal. Structurally, it is not the same as the other opioids such as morphine or codeine.

What is Kratom’s Effect

The effect of Kratom toward human body really depends on the doses taken. At the lower doses, Kratom has an unusual action of producing stimulant effects, but in the higher doses, it caused the opioid and more CNS depressant side effects. The stimulant effects from Kratom is manifested to increased alertness, boosted physical energy, talkativeness, and a more social behavior. Kratom will take effect after 10 minutes consumption and it will be last for one until five hours.
Other uses of low doses kratom beside pain reliever are used as an anti-inflammatory, as antipyretic to lower fever, as an antitussive for cough suppressant, as antihypertensive to lower blood pressure, as a local anesthetic, and as antidiarrheal. Kratom has also been promoted that it able to improve sexual function. According to some reports, Kratom is effective to used by opioid-addicted individuals to help avoid narcotic-like withdrawal side effects. Such function is not available in other opioids.
